Unit 2145

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: plaster; Deposition: layered (wall plaster); Basal Spit: painted
Dimensions: 1.10 x 0.5 m, c.15mm thick
Discussion: Wall plaster within space 110. Outer layers all clean white, rest burnt grey to brown on F10 and along most of F.. .. all layers on wall F .. .. unburnt, white plaster. Bricks behind wall F .. .. burnt red, must relate to an earlier episode of burning, 2 scenarios:
1, wall burnt before first plaster coat
2, wall burnt, plaster removed and new plaster put on wall, later burnt by another fire.
Only problem with the 2nd scenario is that in the latest phase of space 110 burnt plaster was simply plastered over, not removed, so maybe scenario 1 is most likely. 'Ritual' burning??
Red paint on F10 wall plaster, only clearly visible on lower wall (where it joins with red painted floor) and western half of F10
'Greyness' of burnt wall plaster suggests low oxygen condition.
