Unit 22202
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Oven floor
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: baked; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Discussion: The unit was discovered during exc season of 2008 and named U16771. Since it was described as 'oven base', this number was initially (in 2015 season) connected with the oven foundation, and the number 22202 was created.
By the time of excavation, seven years had passed since discovery, and the unit was clearly affected by weather and possibly trampling.
The position (inside an oven construction), and firm, burnt/baked plasterlike character made the definition of the unit as a oven floor rather obvious.
The make-up layer (U22203) was clearly visible underneath, and between the cracks of the oven floor.
The unit was excavated by leaf trowel.
