Unit 2221
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: grave fill,room fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This unit was cleared down to the same arbitrary level as 2220. The northern edge of the brick plaster collapse mass of 2220 was visible in the SW corner of this unit. In fact a solid bricky mass (maybe platform) seemed to stretch across the western half of this unit, joining up with a possible platform plus little wall on the western half. But this mass was broken by two clear edges. By the end of the layer it was clear that this break was caused by yet another post-Neolithic burial oriented E-W along the length of the unit. The burial makes the line of the "platform". Maybe some mixing of material - hence the alternative interpretation for this unit.
1998
At the bottom of units 2259 and 2204 it was decided to take off a part of the control profile in this area next to the northern wall of the building. The first Arb. layer was done in a spit of 10 cm. thickness, and the second one that represents 2221 also consisted of brick fragments from the collapsed north wall of the building. 50 l. of soil.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Small unit backlog material that consists mainly of 003 size bones. Fragmentation is moderate, a low percentage of the bone has been charred and digested bone is absent. NR 2002: Recorded a few more little bags of dry sieved material, and the flotation sample. These mostly add more scrap, much of it large mammal. The surface condition is poor, but probably from being near the ground surface. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as diagnostics and flot frags. The sample is of moderate size and very dirty! it consists mostly of bits of sheep-size scrap, with the major exception being a certain amount of crumbled cattle horn core. There are some dog teeth, fragments in addition to the identified one. Also a bit of fish and microfauna. There is a little digested bone here. Quite fragmented, looks like fill, although maybe midden degraded through proximity to the surface might look similar.
