Unit 2239

Category: layer    dug in 1997

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Building fill

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: This unit consisted of building fill that was brick-like and hard that was mixed with a finer / dryer (possibly burnt) building fill. These two types of fill were mixed throughout the unit. The unit ended with a uniform moister hard clay brick layer. There were some pieces of clay ball and pottery along with bone and charcoal.
Originally this unit, was a 2x2m sqare, the boundaries are noted by the 4 corner elevation points. It was later extended to the west in order to follow the natural, boundary of the plastered wall indicated on the sketch.
In the northwest corner of this unit (broken line area) there is a lot of obvious bits of charcoal (wood?) and burnt plaster and other building material. There are more salts also. The plaster visible (in plan) from the surface contains some visible red paint in section (from the wall surface) and in the area of painted plaster the concentration of burning is greater.

Consistency: moderately weak

Colour: 10YR 6/3

Texture: Sandy clay loam

Unit description: Fairly small unit contains sheep/goat and cattle. A few pieces of bone have been burnt, digested bone is uncommon. A bone point shows evidence of reuse after breakage. {Actually not worked; equid nasal. -NR 2001} NR 2003: Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as diagnostics and flot frags. It contains a couple of bird bone fragments. It is a moderate size sample with mostly sheep-size scrap, large mammal appearing as a few skull and tooth fragments.
