Interpretive Categories: Brick

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.2 x 0.98 x 0.09 m

Discussion: 2856 which was much up of three courses of yellowish brown brick that remained from the partially excavated wall 272. The homogeneity of its material was a distinguishing feature. A crack running along the wall from East to West initially seemed to separate 2856 from a shrew of material filling the gap between 272 and 88. On excavation, this crackling proved to be product of weathering and 'the shrew' of brick and mortar was identical to the material of 2856 and 2857, so excavated with the same unit numbers.

Recognition: Distinctive colour and texture.

Definition: Clear definition fron 2854 beneath.

Execution: Trowel.

Condition: Very dry and very hot.

Consistency: Very firm and compact.

Colour: 10 YR 5/6 Yellowish brown.

Texture: Sandy silt loam.

Bedding: Massive homogeneous.

Inclusions: 2% charcoal flecks; <2% plaster flecks; <2% burnt clay flecks; <2% plant silicats.

Post-depositional Features: Some salt crystalization.

Basal Boundary: A shrp constructional boundary which contrasted prominantly with the mortar of 272, but was slightly bounded to it, so they were difficult to separate. Where the interface was visible it was fairly level.
