Discussion: 2857 was made up of 3 courses of greyish mortar in the partly excavated wall 272. It was distinguishable for its high organic content.
Recognition: Distinctive colour and texture.
Definition: Clearly defined from the brick in wall 272.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Very dry.
Consistency: Very firm.
Colour: 10 YR 6/2 light brownish gray.
Texture: Sandy silt with ash.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks, small pieces and medium pieces); 2% bone (flecks and small pieces); 2% plaster flecks; occasional hackberries.
Post-depositional Features: Some salt crystalization and animal burrowing.
Basal Boundary: A sharply defined constructional boundary that was strongly bounded to the brick of 272. In places the surface between these was clearer and marked by salt encrustation.
