Unit 2863
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Construction layer,Mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: between walls; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.17 x 0.06 x 0.09
Discussion: This chunk of ashy / charcoal rich material originally seemed to be part of layer 2854 beneath, cut into to provide a foundation for walls 96/69 and 98/272 above. However, once brick fragment 2862 had been removed the cracking apparent in section suggested that it might have provided a separate layer of mortar or a foundation layer beneath whatever wall that 2862 may have been part of. Again it is difficult to assign a feature number to this although it seems to be directly associated with 2862.
Recognition: Distinguished by colour and texture from the brick 2862 and by cracking from 2854 beneath.
Definition: Fairly clearly defined.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Very dry and crumbly.
Consistency: Firm/compact but friable.
Colour: 10 YR 6/2 Light brownish grey.
Texture: Slity.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks to medium sized pieces); 2% plaster (flecks and medium sized pieces); 2% bone pieces (flecks to medium sized pieces); <2% clay flecks; burnt clay flecks; occasional hackberries.
Post-depositional Features: Lots of salt crystals.
Basal Boundary: A clearly defined constructional boundary although the material itself differs a little from that beneath. The surface between these was smooth and defined by salt encrustation.
