Unit 30871
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: Bin fill
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: bin; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: Primary fill of storage bin f 7198.
This unit was black and full of grain, unlike u.30833 above, which suggests that the bin was used as a grain store. Some of the fill had fallen out through an animal burrow in the bottom part of the bin. The difference between the two contexts was quite clear when excavated. Likewise the base of this context was clearly defined by what is probably the base of the bin. The base is much more compact, dark, and brown/black, has no grain, and was covered by a thin white lens (possible plaster lining?)
Some of the fill fell out of the SE corner animal burrow and was collected at an earlier date.
The S and E walls also collapsed when excavating, so there may be some mix of deposits. The walls were very thin and weakened by the animal burrow.
Consistency: variable compaction - moderate compaction at bin edges with loose patches in center
Colour: black
Texture: charred grain deposit with sandy silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: none
Post-depositional Features: animal burrow in SE corner
Basal Boundary: clear distinct in color, texture and composition
