Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: accidental backfill,deliberate backfill

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.06 to 0.09 m thick

Discussion: Not sure whether this is a) deliberate backfill of oven or b) accidental backfill which happened through hole in oven roof. Seepage from deposits above as deliberate backfill below (3137) has compressed and settled over time creating a void.

Possibly the oven roof collapsed as it was being backfilled. In favour of a) is the similarity between the first backfill (3137) and this deposit . However, if (3124) is deliberate it would suggest that it was put in to create a level surface at base of bin F.256. This would mean that at least one phase of the bins life was not in use at the same time as oven or maybe even that the bins were a later addition after disuse of oven F.268.

Recognition: Within oven F.268 seen in section from oven entrance and also from hole in oven roof. Slightly darker than deposit beneath.

Definition: Top and sides sharp definition as abutts oven walls and roof. Base fairly clear where overlaps burnt material.

Execution: Trowel leaf spoon, 1/2 sectioned.

Condition: Sheltered, slightly moist.

Consistency: friable

Colour: 10 YR 5/2 greyish brown

Texture: silt 80%, clay 20%, clayey silt

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: 5% small lime/chalk.salt white flecks <8 mm but mostly small, 5% charcoal flecks <15 mm, 2% small frags burnt clay <2 mm, <1% bone frags- small

Post-depositional Features: possible salt concentrations but maybe chalk/lime flecks

Basal Boundary: surface level and flat in SW but curved to N as it follows contours of inside of oven. Base: abrupt, anthropogenic, irregular boundary where overlying burnt deposit (however if burnt depositis collapse I suppose it is sedimentary) Where (3132) does not exist it is gradual smooth, anthropigenic to N, slopes down to N surface below uneven and scorched.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
