Interpretive Categories: backfill,collapsed oven roof

Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.02 m thick

Discussion: Thought to be collapse of oven roof as covers area only just bigger than hole in roof. Also looks very similar to scorched areas visible outside of oven. Alternatively, it could be burnt debris from elsewhere used as backfill.

Recognition: Recognised as a dark reddish brown deposit very similar to top of oven. It did not appear as in N edge at entrance of kiln but when (3134) was removed there was a definite difference in colour and texture.

Definition: Edges at E and W against one wall, tapers down and dissapears to N, uneven surface and hard to see as this area is dark as oven is still intact.

Execution: Leaf, trowel, spoon, difficult ( see above ).

Condition: Very slightly moist, under cover.

Consistency: firm

Colour: 5 YR 4/2 dark reddish grey

Texture: 10% very fine sand, 80% silt, silty loam to clay

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: fragment 10% small white flecks <1 mm salt/lime, 5% moderate small flecks yellowish grey clay/plaster, 2% small charcoal flecks

Post-depositional Features: small amount of root action

Basal Boundary: surface: uneven, irregular, seems to have cracks in it and slopes at edges, especially to N, basal boundary: abrupt, very irregular, anthropogenic.
