Unit 3143
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Description: Methodology same as and copied from 3115
Discussion: After the first page of the unit sheet was completed we discovered an underlying layer of phytolith and black deposit in the SE corner and began to take the layer deeper. This concentration of phytolith became less clear and eventually disappeared, but the boundary between the two layers remained clear, and the overlying layer (i.e. 3143) came off fairly easily.
Towards the NW area, we found 4-5 horse teeth and two hooves. However, apart from the parts of horse, the N end contained very few bones, and had quite a high concentration of clay ball fragments. In contrast, the S end produced a lot more bone. The N end had a higher proportion of rounded stones.
The last 1/2 m at the N end is browner, more clayey, colour 2.5 Y light olive brown/olive brown. The basal boundary is much more clearly defined and the boundary is smoother.
Recognition: arbitrary layer on the W of space 115
Definition: defined to N by overlying wall + midden section, to the S by another section, to the E by a lower level of excavated midden, to the W by edge of excavation
Execution: trowel
Condition: dry
Consistency: firm/compact
Colour: 2.5 Y 5/3 light olive brown, some unfrequent lenses of 2.5 Y 8/6 yellow, various patches of 2.5 Y 6/2 light brownish grey
Texture: 90 % silt, 10 % clay
Bedding: compund layered, wavy bedding, discontinous layers
Inclusions: obsidian chips <2%, clayballs <2%, bones + teeth <5%, shell <2%, wall material <2%, some phytolith impressions 10-12%, rounded stone 5% (medium), salts <2%, small patches of coprolite, charcoal flecks <2%
Post-depositional Features:
Basal Boundary: dumped natural, varies from sharp/abrupt to gradual/diffues depending on nature of underlying material (ie ashy and phytolith underlying layer is more distinct) Otherwise boundary is more difficult to define. Contrast varies from prominent to faint (see above re-distinctness): form wavy, slopes uphill to the north, surface rough/pitted

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
