Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded

Discussion: Compound midden layers accumulated against clay packing/enclosure (32135). The unit is composed of finely bedded layers (ash/clay/charcoal) and for the most part, had a higher density of material culture than other compound layers thus far excavated (e.g. 32114, 32128). The southern and western limits of the unit were easily distinguishable by the clay packing (or constructional element). In the north the unit was delimited by a retention wall (F.5778). In the east, however, the limits of the unit were not clear. Additionally, the northwestern corner was truncated by a post-neolithic burial (F.5077) In addition to a general eastward slope, the truncation by the BACH team along with years of exposure and erosion made the limits of the unit hard to define. A number of articulated animal bones were found within its limits, making it seem as if this unit accumulated faster and was the site of more localized/primary activity. Grid 9 from this unit was prioritized to further explore this hypothesis. Priority feedback and dry sieve volume info by grid are below:

Priority feedback: the chipped stone assemblage was again dominated by obsidian sourced at Gollu Dag, similar to other units excavated in this space. Some flint and chert with cortex found along with evidence for early stages of flint prepration. However, no tools (formal or expedient) were found. This grid contained a high density of mini clay balls with some being heavily burned. The faunal assemblage contained the limb bones from 1 goat and possibly two sheep, mixed with other materials, indicating the potential for several discrete dumps.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
