Unit 3257
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: collapse,dump
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: building; Material: plaster; Deposition: layered (wall plaster)
Dimensions: 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.05 m thick
Discussion: Mixed layer , in some respects a mixture of infilling (3256) above and the 'surface' below. Also contains lots of wall plaster some of it with red paint on. It appears to be a dump layer post-occupation and just prior to infilling. It may well represent the dumping of material cleared in preparation for the general infilling.
Recognition: more plaster, 'greasy' feel
Definition: arbitrary on grid
Execution: leaf trowel
Condition: moist
Consistency: firm
Colour: mixed - plaster 10YR 8/1 white; other matrix 10YR 5/3 brown
Texture: clay loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: frequent large chunks of plaster - c50%, occasional small charcoal flecks - 2%
Post-depositional Features: human trampling?
Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic, abrupt, distinct, smooth, quite flat

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This unit represented by two flotation samples (3 and 4), both tiny, one with only 1 frag, nothing burnt, surfaces varied in terms of weathering - some quite battered, others smooth. 1 fish bone from sample 4. Material appears to have little integrity/consistently - hence mixed? Sample 8 came in later, when this unit was re-prioritised for comparison across the space. For a flotation sample, it is small-sized in amount of bone, and larger than the other samples from this unit. Most bone is not identifiable; a sheep-sized vertebral spine, a few sheep-sized long bones, and one rib fragment from a larger animal (poss. cattle-sized) are recognizeable. There are two teeth fragments from sheep-sized, and one fragment (poss scapula?) with some polish, perhaps from use, but the small size of the fragment makes this inconclusive. Less than 10% is burnt, at low temperatures. Weathering is varied, but mostly very slight. LM's conclusion that the material is mixed is therefore not contradicted by sample 8.
