Unit 3268

Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: packing on oven - bricks in wall?

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: re-used brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous

Dimensions: 1.16 m E-W x 0.2 m N-S x 0.435 m

Discussion: This material consists of two very different parts but it was difficult to separate them in excavation; a grey packing has what looks like tar-coloured pieces of bricks. They are separated in the archive samples S1 grey packing, S2 pieces of bricks. Flotation sample S3 is only the grey packing while flotation S4 is mixed. The phytolith sample is taken from the grey packing.

The material is above the bricks of what is probably an oven cut through the N wall from the outside. A thin trampled deposit on the surface (floor) is against/over the bricks but under this material, which suggests that there was a time lapse between the construction of the oven and the packing of this material on it backside. Bits of the oven is embedded in the grey material (see graph 98-180) which means the oven had been damaged the time the packing was put there.

Final discussion: The discussion on the previous unit sheet is still valid apart from the following:
The packing is not applied over an oven, but over used oven bricks put next to the N wall. The bricks have been used secondary here, but where they were used primarily is not clear. No signs of burning have been found in this room.

Recognition: Grey material against wall with tar pieces of brick-like material.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
