Dimensions: 0.83 m N-S, 0.45 m E-W 

 

Discussion: Oven floor, at base of oven structure, hard surface, vey similar in appearance to the oven floor in F.87. In good condition at the N end (entrance end) of the oven. The mid + S end of the oven floor in poor condition by comparison, cracked and eroded, on excavation thinner and more brittle surface than the oven floor (2865) of oven F.87. 

 

Recognition: Recognised previous season. Very distinct colour (dark grey) and appearance, very hard surface. 

Definition: Clear. 

Execution: Trowel, 1/2 sectioned initially. 

Condition: Dry. Surface: smooth/flat to slightly concave N end/ wavy to irregular S end. 

Consistency: hard to friable 

Colour: 10 YR 5/1 grey (dry) to 7.5 YR 5/1 grey (dry) on the surface, below the surface; 7.5 YR 2-5/3 very dark brown (dry) or 10 YR 2/2 very dark brown (dry) 

Texture: sandy silt 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: occasional 2% charcoal flecks + small frags., >2% occasional shell medium fragments 

Post-depositional Features: >5% white flecks, salts? 

Basal Boundary: change in deposit due to differential heat; gradual/distinct/smooth/concave towards centre of oven
