Dimensions: approx. 0.20 m E-W, up to 0.03 m thick
Discussion: Thin layer of material visible at the top of the oven, over the oven lining below the wall, similar in appearance to the deliberate oven backfill.
Judging by the location of this I would have thought it part of the lining sequence and the ? application (SF 11/10/98).
Recognition: Recognised during excavation of inner and outer lining of oven, distinct colour from lining and from wall (light grey- wall brown).
Definition: Clear.
Execution: Trowel, 1/2 sectioned initially.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: firm to friable
Colour: 10 YR 5/3 brown
Texture: clay/silt
