Discussion: Separate unit no's. have been assigned to all of the elements in this unit/wall (3538, 3539, 3540, 3544).
This is a segment of the W. wal, S. of F. 171, problematic from the start. Coarses of bricks & mortar, sloping to N., are laid over construction rubble (unit 3544), probably the same as the rubble outside the wall (to the W.) (unit 3552) & the one filling space 158. It is also seems that some bricks are also laid in the rubble. F. 171 (bins ?) can also be seen underneath this whole "construction".The 6th brick layer abbuts another line of bricks which is probably the original wall face of the west wall. Moved the last layer of bricks and came down on a packing of orange clay.

Unit description: A small unit consisting of fragmented bones from both sheep and cattle sized animals. There is very little evidence of burning or digestion. Most of the diagnostic bone was the remains of caprines including an astragalus of a juvenile animal. One piece of worked bone was a rib that had been ground flat on one side and very highly polished on the other. {Another piece of this, separated by a modern break, was found in the flotation from unit 6112. It has been glued together and recorded here. I hope they are adjacent units. -NR 2001} No 4mm flotation sample.
