Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded; Basal Spit: basal deposit

 

Dimensions: 55 by 60 by 2-3 cm 

 

Discussion: This deposit looks as though it lay in a scoop. The charcoal layer on top may be the top layer of this deposit. 

 

Recognition: Grey ashy under charcoal deposit (3705). 

Definition: Northern edge, fades out, Eastern edge defined by W wall of space 117, Southern extent fades out and Western extent fades out. 

Execution: Trowel. 

Condition: Good. 

Consistency: loose/friable 

Colour: 10 YR 5/1 'gray' but actually has small flecks of white 10 YR 8/1 + 8/2 and dark brown 

Texture: ashy/silty 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: small flecks charcoal, bone small + rare, obsidian + shell some but not very frequent, plaster lumps, small clay ball 

Post-depositional Features: small roots frequent 

Basal Boundary: the layer was in a scoop, the distinctness is fairly abrupt, the grey ashy fire deposit comes down onto a layer with patchy chunky inclusions and soft browny-grey material in between; the boundary can be seen in the section in the cut into space 117 as a clear change in layers although this is not so discernible when dug; contrast is distinct (see above) form wavy surface
