Discussion: 'Greasy' clay layer, uppermost surviving layer of archaeology under infilling in NE part of space 154 and N part of space 155. There is, however, evidence that at least one plaster floor went over the area which no longer survives, (3285) X1 lying on it. Interesting as it joins two separate 'spaces' suggesting that the N end of space 155 may be more closely linked to space 154 than the rest of 155.

Recognition: Distinct colour and texture, in particular a 'greasy' feel.

Definition: Edges provided by walls and other features.

Execution: Partially excavated using leaf trowel.

Condition: Normal.

Consistency: firm

Colour: 10 YR 4/2 dark greyish brown

Inclusions: occasional charcoal flecks 2 %, small patches of white plaster 2%; small stones 2%

Post-depositional Features: a little bioturbation, possible trampling

Basal Boundary: anthropogenic/sharp/faint/smooth/generally flat but with slope at S end on ridge

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This unit consists entirely of >4mm heavy residue samples, 100% sorted (S63, 64, 65, 66) and recorded. The unit is from building 5, space 154, described as a clay layer. Each of the samples has a tiny amount of bone, nearly all scrap (except for a sheep-size mand frag from S66), mostly sheep-size except for a cattle size long bone shaft frag (in S64). Fragments are small, mostly 1 and 2 cms, in average condition (weathering stages 2 and 3), about 30% burnt at low temperatures. Looks rather like reworked fill material. S63 = F1-5 S64 = F6-8 S65 = F9-10 S66 =F11-14 Last record = F14.
