Unit 3970
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.73 m E-W x max. 0.25 min. 0.07 m N-S
Discussion: Infill between wall 52 and wall to the N of wall 52 (space 151). Very distinctive material, large amount of bones, mainly large fragments, charcoal ocurring in concentrations + spread throughout the deposit. Assuming it's discard but the large bone fragments give the impression of a carefully planned infill and deliberately deposited bones. The wall on the N side is narrow and not yet fully defined, further excavation may provide a more complete picture.
Seems to be the same deposit as (3736) but was given new unit number because it changed considerably in size, narrowing towards base.
Recognition: Infill, distinctive discard type material.
Definition: Between walls.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Moderately moist.
Consistency: loose
Colour: 10 YR 4/6 dark yellowish brown (dominant) + lumps of 10 YR 8/2 very pale brown
Texture: clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: c.10% bone frags. predominantly large (4-10 cm), charcoal c. 10% (0.5-2 cm), c.2% building aggregates + occasonal rounded stones
Post-depositional Features: insect + small animal holes, some root activity, some salt
Basal Boundary: diffuse/possibly not yet reached base

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Same material as [3736], according to the unit sheet; that was a possible feasting deposit, with many large animal parts. This is a small bone collection, however: only one small bag and one flot sample. Sample 2 is large for a 4mm collection. Most of it consists of a very large cattle scapula, in extremely bad condition (hundreds of soft spongy bits and a lot of powder). The glenoid fossa was sufficiently intact/repaired to allow some measurements to be taken. Aside form this bone, the rest of the material looks like standard Catal midden; some long bone shaft splinters and some rib fragments from both sheep-sized and larger animals, some skull fragments, some vert fragments, some teeth (including a sheep/goat shed deciduous molar) and not very many diagnostics. Aside from the big scapula, the bone is in good-to-middling condition, with little surface weathering and mostly modern breaks. There is a small bit of burning, and a very small bit of digestion (less digestion and gnawing than one would expect in standard midden), one piece of microfauna, and no fish. The big scapula should probably be taken as part of the feasting deposit that is mostly in [3736], and the rest as bits of midden that got mixed in with the main deposit, or were possibly at the very bottom of the between-wall space. The small amount of dry sieved material that came in contained one diagnostic bone (unfused distal tibia) which is either equid or very small cattle. The rest of the bone was non-diagnostic shaft splinters from both sheep-sized and cattle-sized animals. Weathering was minimal and most breaks were modern; there was no burning, gnawing, or digestion.
