Unit 4221
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: wall plaster
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: plaster; Deposition: layered (wall plaster)
Dimensions: inner area c. 0.3m x 0.5m x up to 1cm thick max
Discussion: Irregular area of plaster adhering to corner of wall 413 + 415 in SW corner of building 8. This plaster was first re-exposed in 1995 when it extended over a large area + also revealed first frags of wall painting (see 95 sections). The plaster then was seen to be continuous ??? over the height of the wall which would have represented 2-3 phases of construction to "shrine 1". In '95 it was noted that wall 413 off-set the lower wall 415 creating a shallow overhang + the plaster was a continuous render. However this would also represent several phases of re-plastering over earlier phase applications.
As excavated this year, the plaster was in very fragmentary state + was removed as one, in frags. No attempt was made to remove lense by lense as no paint was evident + no association to anything, apart from the wall, survived. Therefore it was deemed unneceesary to spend time on an incomplete sequence.
Recognition: plaster applied to wall face - distinct colour, composition + lensing
