Unit 4369
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Infill between E-W alligned walls between 425 + 430; spaces 168 + 169. Top very rooty because so close to surface + lots of animal burrows presumably due to soft texture of fill. Mixed compound layers - no distinct horizons traceable; appears to be fairly broken down building debris rather than 'midden' with little 'midden' elemnt such as ash lenses but colour v. clearly orangey brown as oppossed to dark + light greys of midden, therefore could this originate from roof debris?
NB not fully excavated '99. Dry Sieve Information: Unknown if any dry sieve
Recognition: Mixed deposits with no layering, convolute / irregular interface between similar deposits + between 2 walls
Definition: defined by 2 walls either side
Execution: trowel in plan + checking section
Condition: very rooty at top + heavily disturbed by animal burrows
Consistency: mod. loose
Colour: vasries from mid-pale yellow-orange brown to mid brown to mid grey brown
Texture: fine silt with hint of fine sand
Bedding: compound layered of similar deposits
Inclusions: 5% small frags + flecks charcoal; 5% salt flecks; 2% orange clay small frags; 1% small plaster frags; 1% ash lenses
Post-depositional Features: natural - roots + animal burrows + secondary carbonates

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: F 55 subsampled for ZooMS (DCO 2014) A relatively small amount of bone was recovered from unit 4369, a between-wall deposit containing building debris. The species represented were caprine, equid and cattle. 4mm flotation sample #2, 100% sorted was recorded for diagnostics only and was similar to the condition of the material from the dry sieve. There was a moderate proportion of burnt bone (20-30%), digested bone and fragmentation were average. In the flotation material there was a first phalanx of a roe deer.
