Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: From priority book: "gully wash - old unit, doesn't fit usual categories - moderate size - quite fragmented, but fairly large pieces - more sheep-sized, but substantial large mammal - includes ovicaprid, cattle, equid, hare, bird. {No sign of bird in anything recorded. -NR 2001} Not extremely fresh, but not very weathered - very little that is rolled or worn, hence not classic gully. Fair amount of low and high temperature burning; component reminiscent of lime-burning layers, but only circa 20%. Pretty even body part distribution, not much coherence. More or less like midden, with more intense burning than usual." [this description was made without seeing the heavy residue material]. Sample 2 conforms to this description, and contains one large scapula fragment from a very young red deer. About 20% of this material was burnt at high temperatures, and is very chalky. Compared with 4882, the layer immediately above it: 4884 has more high-temperature burning, smaller fragments, less gnawing, and fewer bones from large animals (4882 has many equid fragments, which are rare/absent in 4884). The degree of wear and rolling is about the same between the two units; i.e., not as much as one would expect for a gully wash. Possibly from the foundation trench for a lime-burning structure, rather than gully wash? (Wendy). Last Number = 124Figurine Records: No Ground Stone Records: Yes
