Discussion: 4760 was a compound layer made up of two layers of oven base with a thin layer of pale grey ash sandwiched between them. Both of the oven base layers were of a similar fabric, comprising of baked, scorched silty clay material. They represent the latest phases of use of this oven which may be contemporary to some of the floor layers contained in unit 4978. 

Consistency: friable - very crumbly 

Colour: rich, deep reddish brown 

Texture: silt 

Bedding: compound layered 

Inclusions: tiny flecks of charcoal, plaster, ash and pebbles 

Post-depositional Features: none 

Basal Boundary: sharp and distinct, sloping towards the centre of the oven
