Unit 5180
Category: Cluster dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: basket
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: burial; Material: phytolith; Deposition: primary deposition
Dimensions: 36cm e-w, 30cm n-s, ~10cm deep
Discussion: The basket remains are mostly composed of white siliceous phytolith remains - in concentric rings. However in areas there are concentrations of thicker (up to 1mm), harder light yellow material (see Plan) - this also occurred along north + north east sides + may lie over the phytolith traces, some was also found over the skeleton + may lie over the phytolith traces, some was also found over the skeleton + was sampled as 5153 S.4 (see plan 99/791 of skeleton 5177).
The west side of the basket slopes gently down to the base - in fact the sides + base are indistinguishable suggesting that the sides have been disturbed + squashed flat (the overlying skull was quite crushed + disturbed + the basket lid above showed clear signs of movement - it had slipped downwards onto the skeleton due to overlying pressure. Much of the base did not survive - partly due to 2 bouts of rain + the skeleton having sunk into it.
Recognition: white phytolith traces in basket shape containing skeleton 5177
Definition: basket shape
Execution: currently awaiting conservation + lifting whole D. Good
Consistency: very soft + fragile - some areas - where more yellow material - crisper + harder
Colour: mostly white - but some light yellow areas
Texture: very soft + fine
Bedding: possibly seperate layers - one of white phytolith + one of yellow material - but still unexcavated
Inclusions: phytolith
Post-depositional Features:
Basal Boundary: very prominent + clear

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
