Unit 6145
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: burnt debris,fire installation
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: Photo: Section of FI 99T833 16-22
Scapula - 99T833 23-35
Possibly a temporary hearth/fire installation. Very localized concentration of charred plant material.
8/23 Fire installation taken down in cross section (E/W). Rim section composed of heteregenous mix of fine ash layers & clay clumps, the center portion more homogeneous until a larger ashy layer at base. On upper rim of "fire installation" several bones are found including scapula (imbedding in the SW corner of the space)
The installation was taken down to the end of ashy layers below which there is an increased amount of bricks (red&white).
Recognition: Easily/Immediately recognized/ it is unusually rich in very burnt/vitrified wood.
Definition: Up to the section wall.
Execution: Trowel, pick axe
Condition: Damp
Consistency:
Colour: Soft friable charred debris - soil description doesn't reeally apply.
Texture:
Bedding: clay/sand 80% 20%
Inclusions: Compound layered 0.5 ash layers clay clumps
Post-depositional Features: bone bits, ash, charcoal, clay
Basal Boundary: Arbitrary as deposits become more heteregenous presumably approaching floor surface.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Unit description: This unit was a perhaps ephemeral hearth with several bones on the rim. X2 is a big hunk of cattle scapula, but lacking the articulation and certainly not complete. Associated with it are three fragments of three different large mammal cervical vertebrae from at least two animals, one young; a large fragment of sheep-size long bone; a nearly complete innominate of a young sheep/goat; and a rather worn pubis of a mature sheep/goat. Except for the pubis, all are quite fresh, and large pieces but not intact. Two other pieces were apparently less directly associated: a Bos carpal and Ovis/Capra tibia proximal epiphysis. The carpal is the only one that shows any burning, and that only a trace. These might be meal remains not cleaned up after the hearth was abandoned. If so, it was a pretty big meal, with parts of at least three animals (not counting the pubis, which looks more redeposited and may just be from the fill). In fact the long bone fragment looks older than the innominate, so there probably are at least two sheep/goat. Is the scapula fragment a sort of cut-rate abandonment behavior? Whole scapulae or scapula tools are sometimes placed on hearths at abandonment, here a large piece of one suffices? Samples 5 and 6 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Sample 5 is quite small and may contain some actual hearth contents. About half the bone is burnt, mostly at low temperatures. Most are tiny pieces, but there are a couple in the 2-3 cm range. Roughly speaking they are distributed through the body, with long bones, vertebrae, and cranial, in addition to a collection of indeterminate fragments. For the most part the surface condition is not quite as good as the material from the hearth rim. This is likely a mix of bits swept into the hearth during use and background material from the fill. There are no diagnostics. Sample 6 is larger and mostly has lots of little crumbles, not too rolled and weathered. Some pieces range up to 4-5 cm, and there are quite a few in the 2-3 cm range. There are a few diagnostics, and also some bird, fish, and microfauna. It contains a dog canine that seems polished, although not worked, on the root. Might it be an amulet or some such? There is much less burning, and of a variety of temperatures. This basically looks like fill, but not terribly reworked.
