Unit 10420
Category: Cut dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Niche,robbed plinth
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Discussion: Cut of possible ?niche. First see when removing room fill (10404) and uncovering plaster surface. Interpreted as niches with a possible connection with plaster debris (10405)(10406). Through the work of Mellaart, it was thought that these were some sort of footing, a 'posthole' to support pillars from wich bulcrania projected. The debris has since been associated to the bench F1503 and upon excavation the niches are still likely to be as described above. Although fairly shallow (0.05m), these would still be deep enough to support a pillar of approx. 0.5m (as seen previously).
It is also possible that these cuts could have supported wooden pillars/posts, and although no direct evidence, still seems plausible.
The cut appears to go through the top layer of plaster (10407) but stops directly above the surface below. There is no evidence to suggest that the pillar and niche were in place before the addition of the top plaster surface, i.e. No lipping etc.
Recognition: Cut visible on cleaning of plaster surface (10407), platform F1501.
