Interpretive Categories: foundation cut

Data Category Information: Description: foundation trench

Dimensions: 4m N/S to 2m E/W at south tapering to 1m at north

Discussion: Irregularly shaped cut running approx. NW-SE through courtyard 15. Sides irregular, often concave and sometimes undercutting, always steep. Base uneven, sloping down from NE to S + W. Fill removed as 1041, 1037, 1034, 1033, 1028, 1025. Probably cut from level of wall to W against which lies deposit 1022.

SHEET REDONE 1996 Re-interpretation when fully excavated 1996:
Initially cut thought to be other way round, i.e. this being midden below cut to the east. However it wasn't as this proved to be several consolidation dumps behind wall 1515.
Construction cut for wall 96/56. Reinterpretation this year. Large cut probably due to practicality of cutting into midden and need for consolidation.
-> Mary also suggested that large cuts may also be caused by builders of the wall, looking for walls below & the ritual reason or even that could be practical as building on a lower wall may give a better foundation.
