Unit 1534
Category: Layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: bricks,wall
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: max 1.60m lenght 0.10 m depth
Discussion: Brick type 1 in wall 1515
This type of brick overlies brick 3, and forms all the courses of bricks at the North end of the Wall (a section of wall is left in at the NW end of the wall) The addition of the red clay to the brick fabric may be to produce a stronger (or more attractive) brick. Reasons for thinking this: the no1 bricks are above no3 bricks, and presumably above ground and visible and they also form the main type of brick in the load-bearing corner.
