Unit 10813
Category: skeleton dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: Skeleton 10813 is more or less complete, despite the fact that it was located in the vicinity of the 1997 section across the fill of space 112. The burial is oriented east-west. The head is located in the west, and is slightly upwards. The legs are drawn up against the chest, and the arms converge on the right shoulder. The body is on its back but arms and legs are on the right side. On the skeleton a bone hook was found, on the left part of the chest (x1) and beneath the left leg and above the lower right ribs a cluster of 5 flint objects and one antler point was found (unit 1035). Below skeleton 10813 reddish brown discolorations were seen that might be residues of garments or the like, or may represent leaching of the bone (sample 1 and 2 fill unit 10831).
Around the bones of 10813, along the edge of the skeleton, elements of another skeleton, 10814 were found, in many cases directly above or below those of 10813. After removal of 10813 further elements of 10814 were found below where 10813 had been located. From this evidence it is clear that the interment of 10813 disturbed earlier 10814.
10813 is rather robust and large. Pelvis and cranium appear male. There may be a pathology at the bregma on the cranium. There appears to be a bony growth at this point, however there is no reactive bone present.
Right knee (patella ?) as well as the proximal right shoulder are missing due to the 1997 excavations in the southern part of space 112.
The right foot was full of sesamoids around the distal M.T.'s.
Skeleton was an adult, a more specific age remains to be established.
Right foot elements are located directly below the right femur and tibia of skeleton 10814.
X and Y of Targets: Target A - X: 911.5; Target A - Y: 981.5; Target B - X: 912.5; Target B - Y: 981.5; Target C - X: 913; Target C - Y: 981.5; Target D - X: 913; Target D - Y: 981
Body: body is flexed on back with legs tucked up into chest leaning slightly to the south
Head: head is to the west and is upright and tilted forward so that it is facing the east.
Right Arm: right arm is bent at elbow with humerus paralel to the body. The hand is at the glennoid fossa and bent towards the body with the fingertips curled in.
Left Arm: left arm is bent at elbow, the humerus is paralel to the body and the forearm crosses so that the left hand is at the right shoulder. Left finger tips extend away from the body over the right glennoid fossa.
Right Leg: The right leg is bent at the knee. The right femur angles to the right towards the right elbow. The distal femur is gone. The right tibia and fibula are paralel to the femur and the right foot is pointed to extend below the left foot.
Left Leg: the left leg is bent slightly and crosses the body/ chest to the right. The left femur is bent tightly and extends towards also towards the right elbow. The left tibia and fibula are at a slight angle to the femur and are paralel to the right tibia and fibula. The left foot extends away from the body towards the right. The distal phalanges curled up against the bones of 10814 along the edge of the cut.
Other comments: skeleton generally in good condition, but some of the softer tissues (ribs, vertebrae) in poor condition.
Surface Modifications: southern edge of the burial affected by the 1997 excavations.
