Unit 10840

Category: skeleton    dug in 2004

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: skeleton

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: Skeleton first encountered on 25-07-04. Below fill 10842 of cut 10811 feature 1702. Skeleton exposed by Lori Hager. Drawn by Marin Pilloud.
The skeleton was covered by a brown interface with phytoliths (sampled in 10838). This was below sheep skeleton 10839 (north of 10840), but covered 10840. The fill below this interface was excavated as 10842.
The skeleton was a male adult oriented east-west (head in west) - in the same position and body position as later burial 1711 and 1709.
The bones were generally in good condition except for the skull which had been crushed in the Neolithic.
There are a number of interesting aspects about this individual. First traces of red paint (ochre? Cinnabar?) were found on the skull and other parts of the body. Second, a white substance was found on the chest that might have been plaster (sample 3 u.10842). Third, behind the neck a gold brown substance was found that might be an organic residue of some kind (sample 2 u. 10842). Fourth, directly behind the shoulder of 10840 a large flint object was found and a bone point (x2, x3, unit 10842). Fifth, on the upper chest a large worked bone bird was found (x1 u. 10840). Sixth, the burial of 10840 seems to have been closely associated with the interment of sheep skeleton 10839 directly to the north in feature 1702.
