Unit 11973
Category: Skeleton dug in 2005
Area: North
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 0.3m E/W x 0.25 N/S
Discussion: This Neolithic neonate was found within a distinct burial cut into the floor of space 264 in its western portion. The burial fill was also distinguishable from the surrounding matrix. There is some evidence that the skeleton had been disturbed since the left arm was out of anatomical position and the radius was missing. In addition, additional bones that do not belong to this individual were found at the base of the cut. An animal burrow is located at the basal boundary and may account for the disturbance to Sk 11973 and the extra long bones which were initially found. After the skeleton was removed (ie Sk 11973), additional articulated bones (eg. ulna/radius; femur/tibia/fibula) were found. These represent at least additional individuals under Sk 11973. They may be related or associated with Sk 11973 but they will be excavated at a later date. This skeleton (11973) was found in close proximity to five other Neolithic neonates Sk 1195, 11971, 11972, 11973, 11979.

Body: Neolithic neonate, tightly flexed body on right side; some disturbance possible
Head: head outlined to west (slightly WSW); on right sided
Right Arm: Upper arm slightly away from main axis of body. Lower arm bent at elbow with hand in front of the face
Left Arm: Left humerous and tibia displaced; on top of upper right arm (humerous) with proximal end away from soulder; tibia probably closer to original position which suggests the arm was bent at the elbow, radius missing
Right Leg: Tightly flexed at hip, flexed at knee (at a right angle), foot to left of ankle
Left Leg: Tightly flexed at hip and knee, under left leg; possibly displaced slightly
