Unit 12892
Category: Layer dug in 2006
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar
Discussion: (added July 1012)
Things changed following partial excavtion:
orginal dimensions was 3-4cm thick, but we have measured 3-18cm thick
Total soil excavated-the online database would not allow us to put it in, but together we excavted a total of 720L. Since we excavted brick and mortar together, we halved that measurement and put 360L on each of the brick and mortar unit sheets (U12891 and 12892)
The mortar layer constitutes, together with U12891(bricks), the constructive part of F2533. The top 1.2m of the wall was excavated after the plaster(U18916-7) layer was removed. Although the hieght and composition of the layers varied, they are interpreted as one building phase. Where the moratar was more loose and porous, the higher inclusion of charcoal, burnt clay, and lime/chalk pieces. Above and 20cm under U18985, a horizontal niche, the contours between brick and mortar were hard to define. The mortar was here more silty and compact, similar to the brick material.
