Unit 14803
Category: Layer dug in 2007
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: collapse of hearth
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 1.05m EW, 0.50m NS, 0.08m Thick
Discussion: -Lots of brick here, probably structural, but unclear due to truncation on 3 sides.
-Excavation revealed that this was the supersructure of an oven (possibly rebuilt from an ealier hearth) and colapsed/demoloished. Presemubly in preparation for the construction of the overlying platform.
-The second flotation sample, <S3>, is the lower part of the superstructure and contains some of the ashy fill, located on the interface.
-Dimensions not complete, because not completely excavated.
On inspection of section it is clear that the foundation cut for Building 53 truncates this feature. As such, this feature represent a formal area of external fire activity. Possibly the same phase as Roddy's external oven? This feature may be an extremely remnant oven or hearth. FS 9/7/09
