Discussion: This unit represent layers of mortar, part of the eastern wall of B105 (F.2424), but within the courses lower than the mortar 16849. This mortar was recognised as different from the upper courses of mortar during excavation of 16850 but its different consistency and texture. While the upper mortar was compact and sandy, this mortar was very firm and clayey - similar in texture and consistency to the upper phase of B107. Although the mortar from B107 is dark brown in color and this mortar is white to beige, they both have similar spots of red and orange within them.
It is possible that this change in mortar indicates a new phase in the wall/ building. Unfortunately, as one one course of this mortar was excavated, it is too early to definitely say that with certainty. If it is a new (to us) phase of B.105, this top layer of mortar would represent the top of this phase. As it is at a similar level to F.3303, the inner wall of B.105's eastern side, it would be interesting to see if it is connected to it as a double wall, but this will have to wait until next season.
