Unit 18985
Category: Cut dug in 2012
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: groove/niche
Data Category Information: Description: niche
Dimensions: approx. 3.1m NW-SE, 0.03-0.01m high, 0.1-0.3m deep
Discussion: The niche is contemporaneous with the original construction of the wall (12891-12892) and has most likely functioned as a hollowed out groove to bear a timber beam (quite thin) since the groove is only 0.1-0.3m deep. This is not enough to be linked to any bearing function connected to roof or second floor construction.
One interpretation discussed on site is that the beam has worked as some kind of support for the suspension of insulating textiles or tapestry.
There was no sign or imprint of the form, extention of the timber beam into the bottom of the groove although the base if the niche was intact and well preserved. In some places along the groove there was a 1mm layer of smooth, grey clay-like layer that could have been a kind of preperation for a beam.
