Unit 19707
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 3.37 x 0.35 x 0.94 m
Discussion: Removed part of the norhern wall (F 3505). In some places the mortar came off easily and in chunks, in others we had to use a mattock or scrape off the mortar. Some pieces appeared burnt on the portion facing out of the building. The upper half of the wall was exposed for years and had to be conserved; the pieces under plaster that had not been exposed were better preserved and easier to define/distinguish.
Recognition: Color, brick & mortar visible
Definition: Clear in most places
Execution: Trowel & small mattock
Condition: Hot, under shelter; cool mornings
Consistency: Friable to compact
Colour: Mid to light grey, some brown/black fragments
Texture: Clay, silty clay
Bedding: Some parallel layers, mostly massive
Inclusions: Charcoal, small shell, bones, (likely) some burning
Post-depositional Features: Portions exposed for years, some decay & conservation
