Unit 19746

Category: Layer    dug in 2012

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Burnt Rubble Infill

Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 5.40 x 1.50 x 0.20

Discussion: Room infill mostly comprised of burnt rubble. There is an accumulation of more "pink" rubble in the NE corner of the space which gives way below to the more orangish burnt rubble. Beneath the orange surface is a dark ashy deposit which is very friable, and has been excavated as the same unit.

The rubble is quite interesting & gives important insight to what this area may have been used for.

Initially the rubble was though of as the burnt refuse of B 77, but the excavation of the unit actually has revealed the beginnings of an in situ horn core. Although the horn core may not be in situ. The rubble consists of the following building materials: plaster, pise-construction, and mud brick.

The pise construction comes in different shapes & imprints. Overall, it seems to have almost 50% plant inclusion; pieces mostly large (almost 1 cm above).

1) There are flat, rectangular pieces 2.5 cm thick
2) There are rectangular pieces 6-7 cm thick
3) Pieces with reed impressions
4) Pieces with plank impressions (see sketches)
5) Pieces that look like corners; pieces with irregular impressions

The plaster surface looks as if there are least 40 layers of plaster - all white.

The mud-brick is denser than the pise material with fewer plant impressions. 30x18x7 cm.

Overall, the rubble looks as though it is part of a lighter partition from the inside of the space.

One of the key aspects of this burnt room is actually tying it into the matrix as a burning event & its relation to the fires in B 77 & B 52. This space was initially believed to house the rubble of B 77, but the in situ burnt bin F 3650 that came with the removal of u. 19476 shows that there also was a burning episode here. Another dilemma is whether this burning connects to the burning within Sp. 96. So far there seems to be an entry way between the two spaces but it will be difficult to understand the relationships before the complete excavation of Sp. 96.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
