Unit 19846
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: fill post retrieval pit
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: THE INFILL IS RECOGNIZABLE BY SILTY CLAY, SEVERAL FRAGMENTS OF PLASTER AND LESS CONSISTENCY OF THE LAYER.
THE INFILL HAS CHARCOALS AND PAINTED FRAGMENTS IN THE LOWER PART. IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THESE ARE INFANT BONES (NOT CONNECTED AMONG THEM) AND A HUMAN FEMALE MANDIBLE IN THE INFILL. THE HUMAN MANDIBLE (ON THE TOP OF THE INFILL) WAS COVERED BY PLASTER AND RED PAINTED. IT WAS BELONGING TO A TO A HUMAN SUBJECT OVER 50 YEARS OLD.
THE INFILL OF THE PIT SHOWS THAT THIS ACTION WAS AIMED TO RETRIEVING SOME MATERIAL AND IT WAS REMOVED AND DAMAGED AN EARLIER BURIAL (OR MORE THAN ONE). IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE PIT WAS AIMED AT MOVING OR RECOVERING HUMAN REMAINS. ANOTHER POSSIBILITY IS THAT THIS ACTION WAS DONE FOR RETRIEVING SOME ARCHITECTURAL MATERIAL FROM THE NORTH WALL. IN FACT THERE IS A LARGE BREAK AND MISSING PLASTER ON THE NORTH WALL. IT WAS EXCAVATED BY TROWEL.
