Unit 1993
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: grave fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: To W, this was left last year, reason uncertain, overlying layer currently unknown. A skull was found against W edge and upon removal, an articulated torso & pelvis reaching across to E edge, roughly within the bounds of the cut for burial 29.
The fill is therefore treated as (1993) within this reconstructed cut though the description was given for the W edge. Below the pelvis, parts of a leg & foot have appeared, running under the E edge & a cut has been traced in the uppermost levels which may yet prove to be all part of this (16/08 - excavation seriously affected by storms)
Execution: trowel, leaf, stick, spoon, brush
Condition: hot & dry - torrential rain & wind (over 4 days)
Consistency: moderately weak
Colour: 10YR 4/4 dark yellowish brown
Texture: sandy silty clay (sand 5%), sand is minor, but sufficient to affect plasticity
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: charcoal <1cm, <2%; greeny plaster <2cm, <2%; shell <1cm, <2%; salts? <5-10% in areas; clay aggregates <1cm, <2%
Post-depositional Features: white residue around skull (1995), could be residue, or plaster, or salting. Truncated to E and N for burial 29, and top probably truncated too. Root disturbance esp. around skull (1995)
