Interpretive Categories: Burial fill 

 

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: heterogeneous

 

Dimensions: 1.05 m x 0.73 m x 0.26 m 

 

Discussion: This fill represents the context surrounding both burials f. 3961 and f. 3931, since despite being two separate events, the two cuts and their fills were indistinguishable during excavation (we were finding elements of f. 3931 from the outset of excavating f. 3961). Therefore, although there were two filling events in the burial of the four individuals documented here, the fills were sufficiently mixed and sufficiently similar (a red clay loam throughout) to give them the same number.

Note on samples:
All soil was sent to flotation. S1-S12 should be regarded as one sample. 

 

Recognition: human remains uncovered during removal of 20156 -- this is the layer encasing them 

Definition: extremely unclear, except in difference from nearby walls 

Execution: trowel, brush, wooden picks, puffer 

Condition: hot, shaded, windy 

Consistency: extremely firm and compact 

Colour: reddish brown 

Texture: clay loam 

Bedding: compound 

Inclusions: human remains, pottery, faunal remains, obsidian, charcoal

Basal Boundary: soil change to grey silty loam with many salts
