Unit 20156
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: naturally deposited loam beneath topsoil
Data Category Information: Deposition: buried soil
Discussion: This layer was identified as a layer of compact sandy clay loam beneath the silty topsoil, covering the entire trench. Removing this layer yielded a large amount of pottery, some obsidian projectile points, and a skeleton buried very close to the surface (20162). The basal boundary of this layer was defined by the appearance of many walls across the trench's northern half. Many of these walls turned out to be collapsed/dispersed laminations of building material-- which still impacted our decision to divide the trench into two portions-- the north marked by an abundance of building material and the south without.
Note on Total deposit volume:
Unknown volume was unsieved.
Calculated from dimensions in 2013.
Recognition: clearly more compact, moister, patchy soil under first layer
Definition: total extent of trench (naturally deposited layer)
Execution: by pick and hoe
Condition: cool, shaded
Consistency: firm with friable patches
Colour: light greyish brown, with patches of red and dark brown
Texture: very moist, very compact sandy clay loam

Inclusions: pottery, bone, obsidian, copper, flint, clay tools, stone tools
Post-depositional Features: floral growth, burial f. 3961 & 3931, sinking of datum
Basal Boundary: defined by the appearance of many walls in plan in northern half

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
