Unit 20831
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: plaster layer on platform
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: This was an arbitrary unit underneath u.20829 which was defined as 2 layers of plaster and makeup (each) on top of the NE plaform (f.3507). The first layer was 9 cm plaster and the second was much thinner layer of plaster and make up that had multiple lenses. The basal boundary of the unit was the last complete layer of plaster on the platform. The top of the platform was excavated before u.20833 and u.20838 even though it was stratigraphically below them because of the burials being excavated in platform F3508, which is physically below F3507. Only small finds were recovered from these layers.
Addition 30/07/13 /JB:
Today it has actually been discovered that the lower centimeter (1-2 cm) of u.20831, which is stratified in several thin layers of alternating plaster and make up, should not have been removed as part of this unit. The reason is that the uppermost of these thin layers would actually be in phase with with the layers now exposed both on platform F.3508 and the floor in the western part of the building. Therefore the lower part is now given a new unit number, of its own; 20839. U.20839's uppermost layer is in phase with the floors in the rest of the building at this stage.
Note on total deposit volume:
The total volume of this unit includes the soil that later was allocated a unit number of its own (u.20839), as it was excavated as one unit.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
