Unit 20858
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Burial filll
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: The unit was evident in plan as a semicircle of dark grey-brown soil in contrast to the surrounding white floor plaster u. 20855. As we excavated it by pick, trowel, then bamboo sticks, it was clearly more friable than the surrounding matrix consisting of platform f. 3508's makeup. It was also darker, more heterogeneous, moister, and contained a large amount of salts and some charcoal. This unit represents the fill for burial f. 7015, one in a sequence of many burials in platform f. 3508. The compacted areas of the fill seem to be where it has dried out, since areas of this unit were initially exposed in 2013.
Consistency: Friable to compact
Colour: Grey but heterogeneous
Texture: Sandy clay loam
Bedding: Most likely massive though cut is difficult to discern
Inclusions: High density of salts and charcoal
Post-depositional Features: Cutting of subsequent burials
Basal Boundary: Sk. 20859 and cut 20860
