Unit 21169

Category: Layer    dug in 2014

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: 1st burnt infill og hearth

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous

Discussion: The silty sediment layer is very thin and completely covered by calcitic ashes, within which some articulated reed/grass phytoliths were clearly visible. The sediment shows clear signs of rubefaction and it is thicker in the middle of the layer, probably due to the accumulation of debris through several burning events.

This unit was extremely rich in charcoal, some of which was very well-preserved. Due to its nature this unit probably represents the remains from the last burning/usage phases of the hearth.

Few fragmented faunal bones have been found, most of them completely/partly charred, with some being calcined (heated over 600ºC).

This layer represents a considerable accumulation of ashes and charcoal, probably comprising more than one burning event, and is in association with U.21170 (hearth rake-out) and possibly units 20961 and 20980, excavated in 2013 and interpreted as a small, in situ, low temperature combustion event.
