Unit 21162
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Heterogeneous pit infill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Infill deposit made of clayish sediment very similar to mudbrick in composition, colour and consistency. Very few finds were found and these seem to have been secondary/tertiary deposited.
The unit lies on top of a hearth (F.7345) and rake-out deposits. Due to the fact that the top of these layers (U.21169 and U.21170) was almost impossible to separate from the clay of U. 21162 and giving the importance of burnt plant remains for the investigation of human activities and subsistence practices, the boundary between the infill (U. 21162) and the fireplace / ashes has been incorporated to the flotation fraction of U. 21169 and 21170 respectively. This means that the bottom part of the unit (2-3cm in depth) has been flotated as part of the other two units underneath to maximise the recovery of burnt plant remains, following the advice given by the members of the botanic lab.
Consistency: Very compacted.
Colour: Light brown.
Texture: Clay.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: Phytoliths.
Post-depositional Features: Bioturbation (animal burrowing).
Basal Boundary: Constructional, abrupt and smooth
