Unit 21177
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Posthole infill,Retrieval pit infill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: heterogeneous
Description: Clearly defined in plan, with yellowish brown and ashy grey fill against surrounding plastered floor layers. C. 5 cm down, clear distinction to surrounding layers, with grey clayish silty sand. Unclear boundary to bottom.
Discussion: Clearly defined layer in a rounded shape in contrast to surrounding plaster floor. The layer might have appeared after the retrieval of a pit in NW corner of space 113. It was defined as one of the latest units in building 119 after the removal of infill layer u.30123 in the 2013 season. It's located on top of cut u.21305. The unit was excavated using pickaxe and trowel.
The edges of the unit were relatively clearly defined, even if inclusions of the layer at times were noted in the surrounding floor and make-up layers. There are disagreements to whether the layer continues further down or not, as well as to N and W edges.
Notable is that the botanic lab recognized the infill as a typical midden layer.
Consistency: Friable to firm.
Colour: Mixed ashy grey and yellow.
Texture: Clayie silty sand.
Bedding: Layered.
Inclusions: Mudbrick, plaster fragments, pieces of non-worked stone.
Post-depositional Features: -
Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic, diffuse, faint, wavy, steep in N, W and S, more angled in E, uneven.
