Unit 21342
Category: Cut dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Retrieval pit cut
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Description: Note on corners: Square corners formed by angle of walls with an extended cut to form a rounded area. See sketch.
Discussion: The cut shape was determined by the infill layer, the outline of which was followed, hence the irregular shape of the cut. During excavation the outline of a crawl hole in the west wall (F7144) became apparent, see sketch for location. Further removal of fill material revealed two finds, an obsidian point and a worked stones. Continued excavation further revealed a cluster of mixed finds, including: red ochre, obsidian, worked stone, worked bone and shell. The positioning of the two finds spots lends itself to expecting all the finds to be of the same deposit (U21509). Removal of the post hole and subsequent infilling has preserved part of the plaster layer on the south wall, revealing this and the size of the retrieval pit indicates an extremely large post was used in this location.
