Unit 21350
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Infill of oven
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This layer was interpreted as a separate unit due to it being enclosed by oven walls and superstructure. The unit was formed as the superstructure of the oven collapsed, and with time (?) layers of infill were added on. The top layer probably correlating to house infill U30123.
At the start, the unit was excavated in section, using a trowel and leaf dito. Time pressure lead to a change in tactics and the leaf trowel was replaced by a pickaxe and the section removed, as this heavily slowed down the digging proces in the cramped space of the oven. The layer is compounded by different elements, with ashy clayie silt on top and yellowish brown and massive at bottom, where more inclusions of superstructure and low temperature burnt clay was noted. Due to a dip in the top layer, with a slope in west (top) to east (bottom), the top layer rests immidiatly on bone cluster u.21504 in the eastern part.
I stopped excavating as I came across a more massive and homogenous fill, with clay balls, stone artifacts and a cluster of bones as inclusions. This is probably the last usage phase of the oven.
Consistency: Friable at top, to massive at bottom.
Colour: Spotted ashy grey/yellow at top, to shades of burnt clay at bottom (yellow to orange).
Texture: Silty sand at top, silty clay at bottom.
Bedding: Compound layered.
Inclusions: Bits and pieces of superstructure, low temperature burnt lumps of clay.
Post-depositional Features: -
Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic, very sharp, prominent, smooth, steep inverted slopes.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
