Unit 21556
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Floor make-up layer,Oven floor preparation layer
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: As the oven floor was flaked off, this yellow layer was revealed.
Probably due to the heat from the fire In the oven, the top of the layer was more brittle than the bottom, that was more clayie firm.
My interpretation of the layer is that it is a probable preparation layer for the oven floor. It was lined by a dark sandy/ashy soil, making an outline of a somewhat oval shape. Underneath the layer, I could separate two different layers: the clay oven structure by the edges, and dirty floor similar to u.21538 in the centre.
The unit was excavated using a leaf trowel.
